너희에게도 하늘의 상전이 계심을 알지어다 

골로새서 3:25 – 4:1

25 불의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라 1 상전들아 의와 공평을 종들에게 베풀지니 너희에게도 하늘에 상전이 계심을 알지어다

계속해서 골로새서 강해를 진행하고 있는 가운데 지난 주일에 이어 오늘 우리가 함께 살펴볼 하나님의 말씀은 골로새서 3장 25절에서 4장 1절까지의 말씀입니다. 

우리가 현재 살펴보고 있는 이 부분의 말씀은 믿는 자들인 우리가 3장 17절에 기록된 그리스도의 명령을 각자의 일터에서 어떻게 수행해야 하는지에 대한 답을 다루고 있습니다.

“...또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라…” (골3:17)

우리는 그리스도인들로서 그분에 대한 진리를 가리키며 의미하는 우리 주 예수의 ‘이름’을 믿습니다. 그리고 우리가 배웠듯이, 그분에 관한 진리는 ‘주님’이라는 한 단어로 요약될 수 있습니다. 직장에서 우리는 어떻게 주님의 권위에 순종하고 있습니까? 지난 주일의 본문은 그리스도인 일꾼들의 관점에서 이 질문을 다루었습니다.

“...종들아 모든 일에 육신의 상전들에게 순종하되 사람을 기쁘게 하는 자와 같이 눈가림만 하지 말고 오직 주를 두려워하여 성실한 마음으로 하라 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라…” (골3:22-23)

물론 지금 현재 우리 중 어느 누구도 ‘주인을 모시는 종’들이 아닙니다. 고대 그리스-로마 세계에서 흔히 볼 수 있었던 이러한 종속 제도는 고맙게도 이제는 과거의 유물에 지나지 않습니다. 그러나 우리가 지난주에 살펴보았듯이 이러한 원칙은 오늘날의 고용인-고용주의 관계 안에도 적용할 수 있는 것입니다. 우리는 이 땅에서 ‘주인’의 권위 아래 있지는 않지만 우리 중 많은 사람들이 상사의 권위 아래 있습니다. 그리고 믿는 자들로서 직장에서 우리가 하는 일은 하늘에 계신 우리들의 주인 예수 그리스도를 섬기는 일로 이루어져야 함을 말씀하고 있기 때문에, 종들에게 내려진 이 지침은 우리에게도 적용됩니다. 우리는 주님을 위해 일을 하고 있습니다. 궁극적으로 우리들의 직업은 그것이 무엇이든지 간에 주 그리스도를 위한 것입니다. 주님께서는 그분의 이름을 영화롭게 하려는 목적으로, 우리의 일을 통해 그분을 섬길 수 있도록 우리에게 직업을 주셨습니다.

이제 오늘 본문은 믿는 자들 중 직장 안에서 고용주의 위치에 있는 자들을 향한 우리 주님의 뜻을 다루고 있습니다. 그리스도 안에 거하고 있는 고용주들, 감독자, 상사 등 직장에서 다른 이들보다 높은 지위와 직급을 가지고 있는 이들을 향한 우리 주님의 뜻은 무엇입니까?

“...상전들아 의와 공평을 종들에게 베풀지니 너희에게도 하늘에 상전이 계심을 알지어다..” (골4:1)

4장 1절이 무엇을 의미하는지에 대한 질문을 다루기 전에, 우선 3장 25절의 말씀으로 돌아가서 주인들이 왜 이 명령을 수행해야하는지 생각해 봅시다. 직장에서 더 높은 위치에 있는 자들은 왜 고용인들을 정당하고 공평하게 대우해야 합니까? 답은 이것입니다. 

“...불의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라…” (골3:25)

이 경고의 말씀은 고용주와 고용인들에게 동일하게 적용됩니다. “...불의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라…” 주님 안에서 일하는 직장인들인 우리는 각각의 일터에서 여러 가지 경위로 ‘불의를 행하는 자들’이 되어버릴 수 있는 것입니다. 자신의 유익에 유리하도록 동료를 비방하는 것, 자신의 경험과 성취, 교육 수준에 대해 거짓말을 하여 자신의 이력서와 명예를 부풀리는 행위, 직장이 보유한 자원을 개인적인 용도로 횡령하는 행위, 선한 일을 하는 사람들을 조롱하고 동료들 사이에서 따돌리는 행위 등등 입니다. 그러나 가장 일반적으로는 지난 주 본문에서 우리 주님께서 금하신 바로 그 일을 행할 때 직장인들은 직장에서 범죄자가 되어 버립니다. 즉, 마음을 다하여 일하지 않고 상사에게 눈가림하며 불성실하게 일하고, 일을 통해 우리 주님께 어떻게 영광을 돌려드릴 수 있을지 고려하지 않는 것입니다. 주님 안에서 일하고 계시는 여러분, 만일 우리가 지금 이와 같이 일하고 있다면 우리는 그에 대한 보상을 받게 될 것입니다. 

“...종들아 모든 일에 육신의 상전들에게 순종하되 사람을 기쁘게 하는 자와 같이 눈가림만 하지 말고 오직 주를 두려워하여 성실한 마음으로 하라 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라 이는 기업의 상을 주께 받을 줄 아나니 너희는 주 그리스도를 섬기느니라 불의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라…” (골3:22-25)

지난 주에 우리가 살펴본 것처럼, 직장에서 우리가 하는 일은 굉장히 중요합니다. 단순히 돈을 벌기 위해 하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 일하는 태도는 믿지 않는 사람들이 우리 주님과 그분의 복음을 생각하는 방식에 영향을 미칩니다. 신자들이 불성실하며 무책임한 직업 윤리를 가지고 있다면, 그것을 바라보는 불신자들은 복음을 경멸하며 이것이 공허한 말에 불과하다고 일축하게 될 것입니다. 우리의 고객들이 우리가 벌인 수준 이하의 실수들로 인해 피해를 입게 되고 직장 동료들과 감독자들이 계속해서 우리의 실수를 계속해서 눈감아주는 것에 대해 분개하게 된다면 이것은 그리스도의 거룩한 이름을 수치스럽게 만드는 행위입니다. 그러므로 우리의 일을 소홀히 하는 것은 사람에게 잘못을 범하는 것일 뿐만 아니라 우리 주님께 죄를 짓는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 우리 주님은 신자들에게 그들의 일을 부주의하게 하지 말라고 경고하십니다. “...의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라…”

믿는 자들이 직장에서 불의를 행할 때 주님은 어떻게 보응하시는가? 일자리를 잃게 되는 것을 가장 먼저 떠올리게 될 것입니다. 그 외에 다음 직장이 혹독하게 어렵다든지, 아니면 새로운 직장을 찾는 것이 유난히 어려울 수도 있습니다. 혹은 상사의 불신과 동료들의 미움을 받으며 직장에서 고난을 겪게 될 수도 있습니다. 혹은 우리의 일과 관련되지 않은 삶의 어떤 영역에서 주님의 징계를 겪게 될 수도 있습니다. 그것이 무엇이든 간에, 피할 수 있다면 피하는 것이 최상의 방법일 것입니다. 우리 주님께 영광을 돌리려는 마음과 그분의 보응을 두려워하는 마음을 가지고 그리스도인 일꾼들은 우리의 일이 그리스도를 위한 섬김임을 생각하며 그분의 영광을 위해 성실히, 마음을 다해 일해야 합니다.

그러나 25절의 경고의 말씀은 비단 일꾼들에게만 적용되는 것이 아니라 그들을 감독하는 상사들에게도 적용됩니다.“...의를 행하는 자는 불의의 보응을 받으리니 주는 사람을 외모로 취하심이 없느니라…” 주님은 그분의 모든 종들을 공평하게 대하십니다. 믿는 자들이며 고용주인 우리들이 우리에게 주어진 권위를 오용하고 남용한다면, 우리 역시 그에 대한 대가를 치르게 될 것입니다.

“...상전들아 의와 공평을 종들에게 베풀지니 너희에게도 하늘에 상전이 계심을 알지어다…” (골3:1)

직장에서 상사인 우리들을 향한 주님의 뜻은 우리 자신들이 섬기고 있는 하늘의 상사, 즉 하늘에 계신 우리 주님을 항상 염두에 두는 것입니다. 주님은 우리가 고용인들을 어떻게 대하고 있는지 지켜보고 계십니다. 우리가 그들을 의롭고 공평하게 대하고 있는지 살펴보십니다. 상사는 직장에서 일부 직원들을 편애하는 모습을 보이기도 합니다. 그들은 일부 직원의 결점을 지적하면서 다른 직원이 가진 동일한 결점은 모른체합니다. 얼마나 많은 고용주들이 직원들에게 받는 급여보다 많은 일을 떠 맡깁니까? 직원들에게 너무 많은 것을 요구하며 그들의 한계점까지 밀어붙입니다. 돈을 주는 만큼 부려먹으려 하고 훨씬 더 많은 것을 요구합니다. 그러나 그들은 직원들의 개인적인 문제와 필요에 대해서는 배려심이 없습니다. 직장의 상사들은  때때로 자신 밑의 직원들 위에 군림하려 하며 그들을 부하처럼 대하려 합니다. 주 안에 있는 상사, 고용주, 감독자 여러분, 믿지 않는 사람들이 우리가 직원들에게 갑질을 행하는 모습을 보면 그리스도에 대해 어떻게 생각하게 될까요? 직원들은 우리가 믿는다고 공언하는 주님에 대해 어떻게 생각할까요? 그들은 주님을 조롱할 기회로 여기게 될 것입니다. 우리가 고백하는 신앙에 대한 그들의 편견을 확증해줄 기회로 여기게 될 것입니다. 직장에서의 우리들의 태도가 불신자들이 그리스도와 그분의 복음을 생각하는 방식에 영향을 미치는 것처럼 우리가 직장에서 주어진 권위를 행사하는 방식도 마찬가지입니다. 그러므로 그리스도의 종들이여, 만일 우리가 우리 직원들을 학대하고 우리의 권위를 남용한다면 우리는 그에 대한 보응을 피할 수 없게 될 것입니다. 우리 주님은 자신의 권속들을 징계하실 때 편파적이지 않으십니다. 강등되거나 지위를 상실하는 것, 사업상 겪게 되는 어려움과 실패 등은 모두 주님께서 보응하실 수 있는 방법입니다. 이러한 종류의 고난이 항상 주님의 징계의 결과인 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 이러한 좌절을 경험한 후 훌륭한 상사로 거듭나게 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 믿는 자이면서 부하 직원에게 부당하고 불합리적인 처우를 지속하고 있다면 우리는 주님의 징계를 받게 될 것입니다. 그러므로 주 안의 상사 여러분, 그리스도 예수를 영화롭게 하고자 하는 마음과 그 분의 보응을 두려워하는 마음으로 우리가 받은 지위와 권세를 하나님을 섬기는 일로 여기고, 직원들을 공정하고 공평하게 대하십시오. 

일꾼들이 어떠한 자세로 일해야하는지 말씀하신 에베소서 6장의 말씀을 기억하십니까?

“...종들아 두려워하고 떨며 성실한 마음으로 육체의 상전에게 순종하기를 그리스도께 하듯 하라 눈가림만 하여 사람을 기쁘게 하는 자처럼 하지 말고 그리스도의 종들처럼 마음으로 하나님의 뜻을 행하고 기쁜 마음으로 섬기기를 주께 하듯 하고 사람들에게 하듯 하지 말라 이는 각 사람이 무슨 선을 행하든지 종이나 자유인이나 주께로부터 그대로 받을 줄을 앎이라…” (엡6:5-8)

골로새서 3장에서와 마찬가지로 일꾼들은 무슨 일이든지 주님의 영광을 위해 일하고, 성실히 마음을 다해 일해야한다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그리고 상전들에게도 다음과 같은 지침을 주고 있습니다. 

“...상전들아 너희도 그들에게 이와 같이 하고 위협을 그치라 이는 그들과 너희의 상전이 하늘에 계시고 그에게는 사람을 외모로 취하는 일이 없는 줄 너희가 앎이라…” (엡6:9)

직장의 고용주와 상사이신 성도 여러분, 주님의 영광을 위해 직원들을 감독하십시오. 그들을 공정하고 공평하게 대함으로써 우리 주님을 섬기십시오. 에베소서 6장 9절이 이렇게 말씀합니다. “...너희도 그들에게 이와 같이 하고 위협을 그치라…” 만일 저희 딸이 제멋대로 행동한다면, 저는 무서운 눈초리로 아이의 행동을 먼저 고치려고 할 것입니다. 아이에게 메세지를 보내는 것이지요. “조심해. 계속 하면 혼난다.” 그것은 위협적입니다. 직원들한테는 그렇게 하지 마십시오. 그들을 노려보지 마십시오. 그들 앞에서 중얼거리지 마십시오. 그들에게 거칠게 말하지 마십시오. 위협하지 마십시오. 어떤 일로 그들에게 단호한 태도를 보여야 할 때도 결코 위협적으로 행동하지 마십시오. 항상 직원들을 존중하십시오. 위협적인 태도에는 변명의 여지가 없습니다. 우리 주님은 그것을 금하십니다. 우리에게 주어진 권위를 어떻게 행사하고 직원들을 어떻게 대하는지에 따라 우리 주님의 이름을 영광스럽게 할 수도 있고 욕되게 할 수도 있습니다. 그러므로 직장인들이 두렵고 떨림으로 자신의 책임을 수행하도록 가르침을 받은 것과 마찬가지로 우리 그리스도인 상사들도 두렵고 떨림으로 감독직을 수행해야 합니다. 지난 주에 우리가 배웠던 것처럼, 사도 바울은 자신의 임무가 얼마나 중요한지 깨달았기 때문에 두렵고 떨림으로 설교의 직무를 수행했습니다(고전 2:3). 그는 오늘날 많은 설교자들처럼 유쾌하게 설교에 접근하지 않았습니다. 그는 가르치고 설교할 때 단지 복음에 대한 설익은 추측과 생각을 불쑥 내뱉지 않았습니다. 바울은 조심스러웠습니다.  그는 어떻게든 말씀을 잘못 다루고 싶지 않았고, 그는 기도하는 마음으로 설교에 접근했으며, 다른 사람들에게 자신의 직무를 위해 중보해줄 것을 촉구했습니다(엡 6:18-20; 골 4:3). 바울은 자신의 설교가 그리스도의 영광을 위해 얼마나 중요한 일인지 알았기 때문에 두려움과 떨림으로 임했습니다. 그러므로 주 안의 상사 여러분, 우리는 두려움과 떨림으로 우리의 일에 임해야 합니다. 직장에서 우리의 권위를 남용하지 않도록 최대한 주의를 기울여야 합니다. 우리는 직원들을 정당하고 공정하게 대우함으로써 그들에게 복음의 능력을 보여줄 수 있는 놀라운 기회를 부여 받았습니다.

우리가 직장에서 아무리 높은 지위를 가지고 있더라도 그리스도 예수를 믿고 그분의 보혈로 구속함을 받았다면 우리는 그리스도의 종입니다. 고대 사회의 종들이 삶의 모든 면에서 주인에게 복종해야 했던 것처럼, 우리도 삶의 모든 면에서 우리 주인이신 그리스도께 순종해야 합니다. “...종들아 모든 일에 육신의 상전들에게 순종하되…” (골3:22) 그리스도의 종인 여러분, 하늘에 계신 우리 주님께 모든 일에 순종하십시오. 여기에는 직장에서 우리를 향하신 그분의 뜻도 포함됩니다. “...너희 몸은 너희가 하나님께로부터 받은 바 너희 가운데 계신 성령의 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐 너희는 너희 자신의 것이 아니라 값으로 산 것이 되었으니 그런즉 너희 몸으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리라…” (고전67:19-20)

우리가 어떻게 주님을 섬길 수 있는지 알고 싶으십니까? 많은 그리스도인들처럼 우리도 주님을 섬기는 것이 교회에서 일종의 사역을 맡는 것을 의미한다고 생각할 것입니다. 그러나 이번주와 지난주 본문에서 우리는 주님을 섬기는 일이 직장에서 우리에게 주어진 책임과 임무를 완수하는 방식을 통해서도 이루어진다는 점을 분명히 했습니다. 그러므로 어떻게 주님을 섬길 수 있는지 궁금하다면 거기서부터 시작하십시오. 직장에서의 우리의 역할이 아무리 평범하고 보잘것없는 것처럼 느껴진다해도 두려움과 떨림으로 그 일에 임하십시오. 이것이 주님의 은혜와 진리가 우리 삶에 가져오는 변화를 보여줄 수 있는 놀라운 기회임을 인식하시길 바랍니다. 우리의 태도로 우리 주변 사람들에게 어떠한 영향을 미치게 될지 누가 알겠습니까? 마틴 로이드 존스 목사님의 말을 인용하며 마치겠습니다. 

“누군가가 우리를 바라보면서 '이 남자와 이 여자는 남들과 다르다'고 말할지 모릅니다. 나는 이전까지 이렇게 일하는 사람을 본 적이 없다고. 이 사람들은 정말 열정적인 같고, 최선을 다하고 있는 것 같다. 이 차이점이 뭘까? 그러다가 결국에는 '내가 구원을 받으려면 어떻게 하는가?'로 이어지는 일련의 생각을 시작하게 될 수도 있습니다. '” (마틴 로이드 존스, 결혼, 가정, 직장에서 성령 안에서의 삶)

Knowing That You Also Have a Master in Heaven

Colossians 3:25 – 4:1

25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. 1 Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. 

I would like to remind everyone that we are continuing with our series in Colossians picking up where we left off last week in the third chapter of this epistle, from verse 25 of chapter 3 to verse 1 of chapter 4.

As a reminder, this section of Colossians we are working through deals with answering how we, as believers, are to carry out Christ's command in verse 17 of Colossians 3 in the context of the workplace: 

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,” (Colossians 3:17) 

As Christians, we believe in the name of our Lord Jesus which refers to the truth about Him. And as we learned, the truth about Him is summed up in one word: Lord. How do we submit to the authority of the Lord in the workplace? Last week's text addressed this question from the standpoint of the Christian worker: 

22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:22-23) 

Now, of course, none of us are actual bondservants with earthly masters. Thankfully, this system of servitude so common in the ancient Greco-Roman world is an artifact of the past. But as we pointed out last week, these principles are applicable to the employee-employer relationship of today. We are not under the authority of earthly masters but many of us are under the authority of earthly bosses. And because we were shown in this text that, as believers, our work in the workplace is meant to be done in service to our heavenly Master, Jesus Christ, these instructions that originally addressed bondservants in relation to their earthly masters also applies to us as we do our work for the Lord. Ultimately, our employment and occupation, whatever it happens to be, is for the Lord Christ. The Lord has given us our jobs as an opportunity to serve Him through our work for the purpose of glorifying His name. 

Today's text now addresses our Lord's will for believers who are in positions of authority in the workplace. Business owners, supervisors, and bosses in Christ – all who are employers or in other positions of authority in the workplace - what is our Lord's will for us in the workplace? 

“Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” (Colossians 3:1) 

Before we address the question of what verse 1 means, let's backtrack to verse 25 and consider why masters were compelled to fulfill this command. Why must we, those of us in positions of authority at work, treat our workers justly and fairly? The answer: 

25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

This warning applies equally to workers and to bosses. “For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.” Workers in the Lord, we can be wrongdoers in the workplace in many ways: through the slandering of our co-workers to get a leg up on them, or by lying about our level of experience, accomplishments, or education in order to inflate our resume, or by embezzling workplace resources for our own personal use, or by ridiculing those who do good work and encouraging a derelict attitude among our co-workers. But most commonly, workers become wrongdoers at work when they do the very things forbidden by our Lord in last week's text: working insincerely as eye-service to their bosses and doing our work half-heartedly, without regard for glorifying our Lord through our work. Workers in the Lord, if this is the way we go about our work, we will be paid back for it. 

22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. (Colossians 3:22-25)

As we pointed out last week, our work in the workplace is incredibly important. It is not just about “makin' paper”, as people say. How we work will impact how the unbelieving will perceive our Lord and His gospel. When believers have a shoddy, irresponsible work ethic, it will invite the unbelieving who see it to scorn the gospel and dismiss it as nothing but empty talk. It will scandalize Christ's holy name as our clients and customers are ripped off by our sub-par work and as our co-workers and supervisors grow resentful for having to constantly cover for our mistakes. Therefore, treating our work carelessly is not only wronging people but also sinning against our Lord. For this reason, our Lord warns believers against treating their work carelessly. “For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.” 

What form does the Lord's recompense take when believers are wrongdoers in the workplace? Losing our jobs is the first thing that comes to mind. Beyond that, we may find our next job to be unusually difficult. Or we may find it exceptionally challenging to find a new job. Or if we retain our position, we may face difficult adversity in the workplace as we suffer the distrust of our boss and the dislike of our co-workers. Or we may suffer the Lord's discipline in some area of our lives unrelated to our work. Whatever it may be, best not to find out. Out of a desire to glorify our Lord and out of fear of His recompense, Christian workers, consider our work to be service to Christ and work sincerely and heartily for His glory. 

But again, the warning of verse 25 not only applies to workers but also to those in authority over them. “For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.” The Lord treats all His servants impartially. If we are believers with authority in the workplace and we choose to misuse it and abuse it, we also will pay the price for it. 

“Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” (Colossians 3:1)

The Lord's will for those of us who are bosses in the workplace is to always be mindful of our own heavenly boss – our Master in heaven. He is watching how we treat our workers to see if we are treating them justly and fairly. Bosses are often guilty of favoritism in the workplace. They indulge the faults of some workers while being overbearing towards those same faults in other workers. How many business owners overwork their employees for what they are paid? They demand too much from their workers, pushing them to the breaking point. For every dollar they pay, they milk it for what its worth and then demand even more. Yet for all that they demand out of their workers, they are inconsiderate towards their workers personal issues and needs. Higher ups in the workplace sometimes see their position as a license to lord it over their subordinates and treat them like peons. Bosses, owners, supervisors in the Lord, what do you think the unbelieving will think of Christ when they see the ways we mistreat our workers? What will our workers think of the Lord we profess to trust? They will see it as an opportunity to heap derision on Him. They will see it as confirmation of their prejudice against the faith we profess. Just as how we work in the workplace will impact how people perceive Christ and His gospel, so too how we exercise our authority in the workplace. And that is why, servants of Christ, if we insist on mistreating our workers and abusing our authority over them, we will not get away with it. Our Lord shows no partiality when it comes to disciplining wrongdoers of His own house. Demotion, loss of our position, suffering business, failed business - these are all possible ways the Lord's recompense may come. Like any other form of suffering, I'm not saying these kind of setbacks are always a result of the Lord's discipline. We may experience these kinds of setbacks and be excellent bosses. But if we are believers and we are perpetuating unjust and unfair treatment of our subordinates, we should expect to face the Lord's discipline. So, bosses in the Lord, out of a desire to glorify Christ Jesus and out of fear of His recompense, consider our position and authority to be service to Him and treat our workers justly and fairly. 

In fact, remember the attitude workers were taught to approach their work in Ephesians 6? 

5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. (Ephesians 6:5-8) 

Much as in Colossians 3, here also workers are taught to do their work, whatever it may be, sincerely and heartily for the Lord's glory. Now, as scripture turns its attention to masters, they are taught to do the same thing: 

9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him. (Ephesians 6:9) 

Present day masters, authorities in the workplace, supervise our subordinates for the glory of the Lord. Serve our Lord by treating our subordinates justly and fairly. “...and stop your threatening”, we read on in verse 9 of Ephesians 6. Sometimes, when my daughter is really getting out of hand, I'll try to get her back in line with a pointed glare. I'm sending her a message with that look: “Watch out. You're pushing it.” That is threatening. Don't do that to our workers. Don't glare at them. Don't mutter at them under our breath. Don't speak to them harshly. Don't resort to intimidation. Stop your threatening. Even when we need to confront them about something, never do it with a threatening attitude. Be respectful towards our workers at all times. There is no excuse for a threatening demeanor. Our Lord forbids it. By the way we exercise our authority and treat our workers, we can either glorify or scandalize the name of our Lord. Therefore, in the same way workers are taught to carry out their responsibilities with fear and trembling, so must we, Christian bosses, carry out our supervision with fear and trembling. The apostle Paul, as we learned last week, carried out His preaching with fear and trembling (1 Corinthians 2:3) because of how important his task was. He didn't approach preaching glibly, as so many preachers today do. He didn't just blurt out half-baked, speculative thoughts and ideas about the gospel when he taught and preached. He was careful. He didn't want to somehow mishandle the word. He approached preaching prayerfully and urged others to pray for his preaching (Ephesians 6:18-20; Colossians 4:3). Since Paul knew how incredibly important his preaching was for the glory of Christ, he approached the task with fear and trembling. So to, bosses in the Lord, should we approach our tasks with fear and trembling. So too must we show utmost care not to mishandle our authority in the workplace. We have been bestowed with an awesome opportunity to display to our subordinates the power of the gospel through our just and fair treatment of them. 

No matter how high up the ladder we are at our work place, if we trust in Christ Jesus and are redeemed by His precious blood, we are bondservants of Christ. Just as bondservants in the ancient world owed their masters obedience in every aspect of their lives, so do we owe Christ our Master obedience in every aspect of our lives. “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters...” (Colossians 3:22) Bondservants of Christ, obey in everything our Master in heaven. This includes His will for us in the workplace. “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) 

Have we wondered how we can serve the Lord? Perhaps, like many Christians, we think serving the Lord means taking up some kind of ministry in the church. But this week's and last week's text has made it clear that serving our Lord also takes place in the workplace, through the way we fulfill our responsibilities and tasks. So, if we are wondering how we can serve the Lord, start there. No matter how mundane or thankless our role may be at work, treat it with fear and trembling. Recognize it as an incredible opportunity from the Lord to show the difference His grace and truth produces in our lives. Who knows what kind of impact this will have on those around us. In the words of Martyn Lloyd-Jones: 

“You never know when someone looking on may say, 'This man and this woman are different from others. I have never seen anyone work like this before. These people seem to be really interested, they are doing their best. What is this'? And so you may start a train of thought that will eventually lead them to the question, 'What must I do to be saved?
