What Accords with Sound Doctrine (Part 2)

Titus 2:1-2

1 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

I would like to remind everyone that we are continuing with our series in Titus, picking up where we left off in the second chapter of this epistle, resuming our study of verse 1 – 2.

If you recall, in this section of Titus, the apostle Paul exhorts Titus to teach what accords with the sound doctrine of God's gospel decree. At the very beginning of this epistle, Paul mentioned the two purposes for his apostolic commission. The first purpose for his preaching was to call people to faith in Jesus Christ for their justification. The second purpose for his preaching was to teach the believing the truth for promoting their growth in godliness.

1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, (Titus 1:1)

Based on the context of today's text, it is clear that Paul's focus is on the second purpose for sound, gospel doctrine: the godliness of Christ's church. He then emphasizes certain aspects of godliness for the various demographics of the church, beginning with older men. Last week we had considered the first three of those godly aspects emphasized for the older men of the church. Today, we will consider the remaining three aspects emphasized: soundness in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

Older men in Christ, what is the fourth aspect of godliness emphasized for you? Soundness in faith. You might remember that in the beginning of this series, we had studied the meaning of faith. What is faith? Faith is a noun. In the original Greek, the word for faith is pistis. The verb form of pistis is pisteuo which the New Testament translates as “believe”. So, faith put into action is believing. Believe is the verb form of faith. If we want to say we are exercising faith, we say we believe. In context of today's text, to be sound in faith involves believing what is right and true concerning the will of our Lord as it is revealed to us in His gospel decree. If we believe what is out of accord with His revealed will, that would be an unsound faith. Older men in Christ are to be sound in faith, believing in accord with the sound doctrine of the gospel in everything that it teaches to the church.

Why is soundness of faith emphasized for older men in the faith? I think it is emphasized because older men are often accustomed to others deferring to them. They have seniority in the family, they may have enjoyed seniority in the workplace. They may be accustomed to others deferring to them because of their age, status, position, and experience. But they must never forget that they themselves must always defer to the sound doctrine of the gospel with complete submissiveness. As for all believers, they must always keep their opinions, ideas, and desires fully subordinate to the gospel since it is, as we've emphasized throughout this series, God's own word to us. That means older men in Christ must have a humble, teachable attitude when it comes to learning the gospel, an attitude that is ready to accept correction when they go astray from its sound doctrine. Older men in Christ must never adopt a know-it-all attitude that stubbornly resists the correction of God's word. I think that due to their seniority and the preeminence they tend to enjoy on the social ladder, older men in Christ are particularly vulnerable to an obdurate attitude that is slow to accept correction. But to maintain soundness in faith, we must be ready and willing to accept correction when we go astray from the clear teaching of God's word no matter who it comes from! We must not be stubborn simply to save face! Older men in Christ, we must not be double-minded, dividing our loyalty between the decree of our Lord and our own desire to look like the wisest person in the room. Sometimes our insights and ideas, even well meaning, can be wrong and out of accord with sound doctrine. Older men in Christ, remember to always give single-minded loyalty to the word of our Lord so that we will humbly accept correction from our brethren when they reprove any erroneous belief on our part and thereby maintain a soundness in faith.

Older men in Christ, what is the fifth aspect of godliness emphasized for you? Soundness in love. Now, why would soundness in love be emphasized for older men in particular? I think one reason why it is emphasized is because some older men may be prone to showing partiality in the body of Christ and to show partiality is to be unsound in love:

1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?

8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. (James 2:1-9)

Although the world makes much ado about a person's wealth and social standing, we know that such earthly distinctions are irrelevant to a person's heavenly status. No matter where a person may be situated on society's social ladder, if a person hears the gospel and turns to Christ in saving faith, that person is adopted into God's household and are full-fledged children of God, entitled to all of its privileges as much as any other believer in Christ. There are no second-class children of God.

5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. (James 2:5-6)

God has chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. In the same way, God has chosen those from every tribe, peoples, and languages to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. No matter their earthly status or cultural background, every believer in Christ is to be honored as a brother in the household of God. Yet, to do this may be more difficult for an older man in the body of Christ. He may have become accustomed to his own social circle. He may have spent much of his adult life befriending people of a similar cultural and socioeconomic background. His entire church may consist of people from a similar background. He may have spent decades enjoying fellowship exclusively with Christians from a similar background. And then suddenly, a believer from the outside enters into his church orbit – someone with an unfamiliar culture, unfamiliar appearance, unfamiliar mannerisms – a kind of person he may have sometimes dealt with transactionally - a service worker who takes his order at a restaurant or delivers his packages or works on his landscaping - but never communally as a fellow brother in Christ. The older man might be so set in his ways that he is tempted to think this outsider has violated an invisible boundary, an intrusion into his comfortable, familiar peer group. He may be tempted to perceive this outsider as a perpetual guest who doesn't really belong. So, while he may be receptive and warm to his “own kind” in his church, he may feel an urge to regard that “outsider” with patronizing coldness although he too is a believer and just as much a brother in Christ. To give in to that temptation would be partiality and an unsound kind of love. Older men in Christ, we are to be sound in love. Let us always view our fellow brethren in Christ through the eyes of faith instead of judging them with evil thoughts. Let us see them, regardless of their social and cultural background, for who they are in Christ: chosen by God, rich in faith and by that faith heirs of the kingdom along with us. It may require some effort on our part and some adaptation but let us always do as our Lord requires: “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God.” (1 Peter 2:17)

Finally, older men in Christ, the sixth aspect of godliness emphasized for us is steadfastness. Why steadfastness? Well, I think steadfastness is singled out for older men because many older men have retired from their occupation and have moved on from the responsibilities of their younger years. They may be tempted to see their various areas of stewardship to the Lord as a yet more responsibilities for the chopping block! They may buy into the idea that their twilight years should be spent for self-indulgence and not for Christ. They may be tempted to think, as so many older people in the world think, “I've earned this!”, “I've done my time!” They may be tempted to think that their self-absorbed attitude compensates for all their years of hard work and sacrifice. So, they may be tempted to wash their hands of the various areas of stewardship which the Lord has entrusted to them and say they are, “No longer my problem.” They may see trouble brewing among their children and grandchildren and they want to say, “No longer my problem.” They may see trials brewing in their church and they want to say, “No longer my problem.” Older men in Christ, there may be retirement from earthly employment but there is no retirement from our stewardship to the Lord Jesus Christ. We are His servants and stewards to the day we die and for all eternity. Older men in Christ, let us learn from the example of our brother, Caleb, who has long since gone on to be with the Lord:

6 Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. 8 But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the LORD my God. 9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. 11 I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. (Joshua 14:6-11)

Older men in Christ, we may not be physically strong today as we were in our prime. But we ought to be strong in godliness – strong in sober-mindedness, strong in dignified living, strong in self-control, strong in faith, in love, and steadfastness. We may not have the strength to take a robust, hands-on approach for our areas of stewardship any longer. But we have the strength to pray and to contend in prayer! We have strength to praise our Lord and honor Him through our words and a godly manner of life. Older men in Christ, let us be sound in steadfastness, not regarding our final years on earth as a retreat from our service to the Lord but as our final opportunity to glorify Him and stand as a godly example to the younger generation in His beloved church!
